The SEO Checklist That Unlocks 48.7% More Organic Traffic

For years, my advice to new bloggers has been the same – ignore SEO. At least until Google is sending a little traffic to your site.

But what I haven't talked much about is what to do once you are getting some traction.

So if that's you (or you're just curious about what comes next) you should read this post from Brian Dean:

Now I know a thing or two about SEO, but this guy runs circles around me. :-)

It's a great post, but here's specifically why I'm sharing it with you:

• The headline is awesome. I'm famous for my "Headline Hacks" download – a list of proven headline formulas – but Brian's doesn't follow any of those templates. Which just goes to show that it sometimes pays to break the rules.
• It's a long post that's rich with detail. There are 50+ screenshots plus embedded quotes and videos explaining and illustrating every step. In fact, it's difficult to see how Brian could have made his post any more practical or helpful.
• It's a case study but it's told as a story which makes it super readable. Granted, it's still a story about SEO, so I don't think Hollywood will be optioning the movie rights anytime soon, but if you're into the subject, it's way more engaging than other posts you could choose to read.
• It's packed with proof. Most bloggers tell you what to do but provide no real evidence that their advice actually works. It's the total opposite situation here. By the time you've finished reading, you're in no doubt that Brian's tips are the real deal.

Ever thought about starting a podcast?

(In the headline of the post, it says 60 million, but if you read down below, he says it’s now crossed 100 million.)

And here’s what I’m linking to it:

1. Shocking admission: right now, we don’t have anything good to publish. Lots of tomatoes growing on the vine, but none of it is quite “ripe,” so we’ve decided to throw caution to the wind and publish nothing. Here’s why: you deserve the best. If it’s not the best, we’re not publishing it, even if that means the blog loses a little traffic this week. Personally, I’m proud of that.
2. It’s a cool thing to do for you. The fact that we only promote our own stuff when the web is full of amazing posts is kind of absurd and maybe even unethical. If we really believe in giving you the best, then we should also clue you in on the best stuff published on other blogs. At least, that’s my thinking.
3. The post by Tim is really freaking good. By far, the best post ever published on podcasting, and I’ve read a bunch of them. Even if you’re not interested in podcasting, it also contains some fascinating insights on how to build a personal brand, written by a guy who built one of the biggest personal brands in the world.

My favorite quotes:

• Novice podcasters (which I was) and bloggers get too distracted in nascent stages with monetization. In the first 3-9 months, you should be honing your craft and putting out increasingly better work.
• Whenever possible, I avoid what I consider the “blood-bath zone” — products or services priced from $20-100. This is where your customers will be at least 1/3 high-maintenance and cost-sensitive. For my minimalist preferences and operation, that’s too much customer service headache for the ROI, unless it’s automated like my book club with Audible.
• There is no long-term revenue strategy. I focus solely on making it as fun as possible for me to do. But — perhaps this itself is a solid strategy, not a lack of one. Simple can be effective.
• If you start out bad but are incrementally improving towards awesome, that’s totally fine. If you’re half-assing it and coasting, find something else you can whole-ass.
